Oh! You two are leaving tonight then?
I'll take over as soon as you leave if you like then.
Just have to hop back up to the courtyard to let the
kids know I need someone to make those last few
deliveries for me...

Grizz bends down, picks up the book and
note. Veronica makes a grab for the note, but Grizz
holds it behind his back. With a very stern look, (but
with his eyes twinkling, he says...
"Don't you
think it would be a good idea to take your Relto book
with
you?"

kestryll steps back and tries to look
inconspicuous.
I'll be down this aisle when
you two are ready then.

Not a problem. Oh, hey, I didn't know
you carried hair color. Look, you've got my color and
brand too... Um, did I just say that out
loud...

Veronica smiled (a strained, but I am
perfectly innocent smile) and said, "Yes, I planned to."
She bent over and retrieved her Relto book and
reattached it to her hip.
"Are you ready to go?
Why do you have all that equipment? Do you expect me to
use that rappelling gear?! Do you think I'm crazy?" She
adjusts the backpack and puts her hand on her Relto book
once more, just to be sure. It is obvious she is
impatient to leave.
"How about some of this..." "No
broccoli tea!" "What, you liked it?" "I thought it
had a unique taste..." "What is broccoli
tea?" "Don't ask..." "Oh, it's this tea that a
fellow scientist made up..." "Anywho! How about a few
sandwiches!" "Any garlic
scones?" "Garlic?" "NO!" "Aww...
please?" "NO!" "Why would you put garlic in a
scone?" "Don't ask..." "Oh, just one..." "THERE
ISN'T ANY!" "Oh we should ask..." "NO! We don't
have time to do that..." "Oh yes..." "We'll do it
once you ask Veronica out on a date!" "Oh, you have
the hots for Veronica?" "Grr..." "That's more like
it! Pack some sandwiches and we'll be out of
here,"
Try to guess who is who.

"Okay then," Grizz says as he carefully
folds the note and uts it in his pocket. Veronica
notices this and flushes a little, opens her mouth to
say something, then thinks better of it.
"Now.
Are you sure you've got everything you need in your
pack. Don't know how long we'll be gone. You got enough
makeup to last?"
She glares at him.
He
relents.
"I'm sorry Nica. Sometimes I just can't
help teasing a little."
He puts the rope and
other gear into the top of his pack, and straps it up.
Then he puts his arms through the straps, settles the
pack on his back, and fastens the front.
He picks
up the DRC book from the counter and opens it. Veronica
comes and looks over his
shoulder.

"Oh, look at that picture. Should we
start there? Wait." She moves in front of him and turns
the page. "Ohhh, we could go here first. I did not even
consider there would be more than one age, did you? Or
maybe it's the same age." They stare at the swirling
picture for a few minutes and then Veronica says, "This
morning when I asked the Professor if he would join us,
he said he might consider it if he was able to get away.
Can we leave the book on his desk, just in
case?"
Grizz looks at Veronica. He considers
her for a moment with a smile on his
face.
"Nica," he says, "I have to tell you again
that you have justified all the trust and faith I put in
you. And I knew you were intelligent too, under all that
manner you used to have. We'll do exactly as you
suggest."
He closes the book, sticks it under one
arm, motions with his head toward the door, and they
walk out together, up the stairs and approach the
wedgied door of the office.
The peek in. Seeing
no motion, they enter and go to the desk. Grizz puts the
book down on the desk and opens it.
He looks at Veronica for
her approval of the page he has selected. She
nods.
He says...
"You went first last
time. Let me go first this time, okay?"
He
turns, and without hesitating, places his hand on the
page, and
links.

Kestryll leans out from one of the
aisles and looks around. Seeing no one he strides over
to the doorway and pokes his head out. Neither seeing
nor hearing any sign of Grizz and Veronica he dashes up
the stairs and catches the one of the last of the Bahro,
one of the Bettys, and whispers to her.
She nods,
he grins, she goes back to cleaning up and he dashes
back down to the DISCO. He drops his pack behind the
counter and flops down in the
chair.
Sometimes you need a sit-down job. Let
my vacation begin.

Veronica stared at the picture, it
looked so familiar to her. Just before she linked, she
took a piece of paper and wrote a note to the
Professor.
Dear Sir, Grizz and I have left
to explore this new DRC age. We wanted the book to be
left in your care should you decide to join us at some
point. Thank you again for this
opportunity. Sincerely, Veronica
She
carefully attached the note to his calendar and then
with a smile on her face, placed her hand on the picture
and linked
away.
"Yeah, Speedy, it's getting late. Let's
head out sometime tomorrow," Dr Warrell said. "Ok,
sounds fine with me. Besides, Thietris has the book we
need to link anyways and he's sleeping right now,"
Speedy said. "So goodnight everyone then! See you in
the morning," said Merlin as he walked off. "Same
here," said Dr Warrell as he walked off. Speedy flew
off, landed in her nest, and went asleep. Dr. Warrell
eventually got to the place where he was staying, the
mansion that he explored with Speedy and Grassie. Just
before going to sleep that night, he pondered on if he
ever did ask Veronica on a date, where they would go.
Maybe the new age I'm going to explore, he thought as he
closed his eyes.

Kestryll gets bored and goes for a
walk around the hood. He stops when he spots something
blue atop one of the rooftops. He
ponders...
C.U.T.E.
Then he goes
back to the DISCO and settles in for the
night.

Previously Magenta
Planets Burning the midnight oil with the
programmer/game designer Bahro, Chuckles58 can see that
this 'Magenta' game has great promise. Who hasn't
dreamed of being a game designer. Why Chuckles still
remembers back to his college days when his daydreaming
buddy who was staring out the window in computer class,
suggested they drop out of school to design software. He
knew that eventually that Gates kid would come to his
senses and get a real job.
But the time for a
Live test of Magenta had come. The general idea of the
game is a simulation of a computer game development
company in Washington State known as 'Magenta Planets'.
The game player assumes the role of one of the
programmers, and via the slick interface, actually
creates a virtual reality computer game he can play in
total immersion.
Chuckles volunteers to be the
first to try the game. Since the game is not even to
Beta stage, many game elements will not be present,(such
as the mortality failsafe). Despite that, Chuckles sits
down to the computer workstation, places the 3D virtual
reality unit onto his head, swallows hard then double
clicks the Magenta icon on the desktop.
The next
thing he knows, he is sitting at another computer
workstation. Nearby are all sorts of programmer tools,
books, clay models, action figures, story boards, empty
pizza boxes and a simple manila folder.
He opens
the manila folder. In it is a handwritten letter and a
CD-ROM. It is from the President of Magenta Planets,
Round Mueller. The note requests that the reader test
the new game just completed by the talented group of
artificial intelligence programmers.
Oh good,
there's a tutorial scenario to get used to the
interface.
He fires up the game called
"Adventure on the High Seas". The next thing he knows,
he is literally sitting on an 18 foot catamaran sailboat
in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. The wind is crisp
and steady. He trims the sails, then adjusting the
harness he's wearing, he pulls in the rope to tighten
the main sail. He moves to the edge of the windward hull
and continues to tighten the rope. The hull lifts off
the water, and in no time he is flying the hull.
Chuckles can't
believe how realistic and exhilerating the experience
is, he can taste the salty air, he can feel the Myst
splashing up from the dipping and bobbing of the
starboard hull as it cuts through the sea. He hears the
splashing of the water against the boat as well as
distant seagulls and fog horns.
This is
amazing. It's so realistic. How can this be if the game
isn't even in Beta yet?
He should have known
better to entertained those thoughts, as at that very
moment, one by one the grommets holding the sail to the
mast began to split. The flying hull quickly fell back
to the surface of the ocean, jarring Chuckles, his feet
slipped from their place on the hull. He hit his head on
the mast, just as the sail completely tore off. The
harness he was wearing was tangled with the sail which
caught the wind again and pulled away from the sail
boat, carrying Chuckles with it. As he fell into
unconsciousness, the sail carried him far from the
helpless boat.
His motionless body lay on the
beach of a small desert island. The sail breaks free
from his harness and floats
away.
