"Valderi, valdera,
valdera-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha..."
The strains of
the familiar song (the Explorer's Anthem?) echoed
distantly in the Institution, and grew gradually louder,
stopping only when they had reached Professor T's door.
Two gentlemen stood there, dressed in old-fashioned
hiking gear. One was bright and breezy - the one who
appeared to be the leader and had been exercising his
vocal cords - while the other wore a permanent
scowl.
"Good morning, sir!" called Bright and
Breezy from the doorway, raising his hat. "We're looking
for the northwest passage."
Professor T came to
the door. He put one paw to his mouth and looked
thoughtfully this way and that. "I think it's that one
over there," he said, pointing to the walkway leading to
the fountain.
"Thank you kindly, sir!" said
Bright and Breezy, giving the professor a clipped
salute. "Thataway, Clark!" he added, pointing with his
hiking stick. He strode off. Clark followed, somewhat
less enthusiastically, giving the professor a brief
sullen
glance.
Veronica has nearly reached the trees
when she suddenly realizes that it may not be all that
easy to find a safe haven in there. She stops
abruptly.
Grizz, who has beeen chasing her,
notices, and stops also. Something about the way she
stands and looks into the trees makes him forget all
about chocolate. He comes up beside her takes his own
close look.
"Is that a...path...or animal trail?"
he asks himself a little
apprehensively.

Veronica quickly moves to stand behind
Grizz. "I think it is too wide to be an animal trail."
She peeks around his shoulder, "What do you
think?" Before he can answer she says, "You go first."
Then she ducks behind him again. "Or should we keep
walking down the beach?" She laughs
nervously.
Cordelia notices the two strangers
wandering across the courtyard and wonders who they
could be.
Walking back to the professor's ask she
pops her head around the door to ask him but notices
that he is busily involved in looking at important
documents so thinks better of it.
"I think I'll
leave him to it and go across to the Egg Room to see
what delicacies there are for Elevenses"

"No," he says. "I think it's time we try
to get through the trees."
He turns to her,
looking at her seriously.
"I also think we'd
better be a little more careful, and a lot more quiet.
This is a new age. I don't have any idea what
made that path, but whatever it was is at least as big
as we are."
He turns, and settles his pack on his
shoulders more comfortably. Looking over his shoulder
with a smile for her, he says...
"I'll lead the
way if you don't mind. Please stay close and don't
wander off. We really don't know how wide this belt of
trees is."
He squeezes between the trees and
works his way towards the path, Veronica following
almost in his
footsteps.

They soon arrived at the egg
room. The area looked familiar.
"Now look what
you've done, Clark! We've walked round in a complete
circle. Another fine mess!" Lewis turned and glared at
Clark. "Never mind. Let's get us something to
eat."
They entered the egg room and walked up to
the counter. Lewis removed his hat and cuffed Clark in
the ribs with it, as a prompt for Clark to remove his
own hat.
"I'll have fried eggs, sunny side up,
bacon, mushrooms, sausages and tomatoes, and a large
coffee, please."
Clark opened his mouth as
if to speak, but Lewis continued "My friend will have a
slice of toast and a glass of water."

"Well, we should at
least make a camp somewhere to have a home base..."
Grassie commented. "And it would make sense for it to
be near the linking spot," Speedy said. "How about if
we just check this area and see if we can find anything
suitable?" asked Merlin. "Ok, that sounds good," said
FM. They split up into two groups: Speedy, Dr Warrell,
and FM in one group while Grassie and Merlin were in
another. They decided to explorer no more than 500ft
away from the spot they were just at. Speedy, Dr
Warrell, and FM went to the left. The other two went to
the right. After 10 minutes... "I've found
something!" Grassie said. "Where?" asked
Merlin. "Oh yeah, I have good night vision. Look up
at that tree over there," Grassie said as pointed
up. Merlin checked that area and eventually saw it.
"Woah, people lived here?"
Merlin said. "More than likely. Come on, let's go
back and get the others so that we can all check it out
together," Grassie said as he turned
around.
Meanwhile, Speedy, Dr Warrell and FM
were having an interesting time of their own. Speedy was
flying around, checking the canopy in case there were
some building on the upper levels. Instead, she found a
bunch of vines. "Oh geez..." she muttered as she got
tangled in the vines. "lol!" said FM. "This isn't
funny!" Speedy snapped as she began to use her talons to
get the vines out of the way. "Hey bring down a vine
so I can study it!" said Dr Warrell. "Do you see
anything down there!" Speedy asked. "No, it's rather
dark. How about you?" asked Dr Warrell. "No... oh
wait! I think I do!" Speedy said as she saw this. "What? What do you see?"
asked FM. "I see something that looks like
Channelwood... upper wooden pathways, a building or
two... we need to check it out!" Speedy said excitedly
as she finally got out of the vines. "Well, we need
to get Grassie and Merlin first," said FM. Speedy
flew down, carrying a piece of vine for Dr
Warrell. "So, let's go get them!" Speedy said as they
headed back to the meeting point.

Undecided as to
whether she should be angry or helpful, she stands and
looks at the two strange men who are demanding that she
serve them breakfast.
Finally she decides that
maybe a touch of politeness would be appropriate, so she
indicates to Lewis that the plates are in front of
him.
"Good morning Gentlemen, we do actually work
on a self-service basis here. Please feel free to take
what you require. If you would like something that you
can't find then please let me know and I will contact
our caterer."

Merlin, you keep on forgetting Dr Warrell! We can't lose
him!
OT:
"Woah," said FM as he saw the
house. "Good! A place for camp!" said
Speedy. "What?" asked Dr Warrell as he jogged up from
behind. "Dr Warrell, can't you at least for once stay
with the group?" asked Speedy. "I try but you guys
seem to disappear without even telling me!" Dr Warrell
muttered. "Oh well. Come on, let's check out the
house," said FM. "What did you find? I did hear some
shouting from your direction," said Grassie. "We
found stuff that looked very much like Channelwood...
we'll show you when it gets lighter," said
Speedy. "If it does..." muttered Merlin as they all
walked to the house.

Veronica is trying her best to be quiet,
but unfortunately it is next to impossible for her. In
loud whispers she continues to talk, mostly because she
is nervous.
"Did you hear that? I wonder where
it's coming from." They walk a few feet and then,
"Should we have brought some type of weapon?" A couple
more and then, "Do you think we should turn back?"
After stepping on the back of Grizz's heel for
the third time, he turns around and says, "What part of
a lot more quiet did you not understand?"
"I was being quiet."
She brushes by him
to take a closer look at the foliage growing nearby.
"Oh, take a look at this. We really should get Seymour
and Chere on some of these explorations once things
settle down for them. Maybe they could take samples back
and grow them at WHOOPS. Do you think we could pick a
few? Well, it might be too dangerous, what do you think?
Perhaps..." She walks ahead talking a mile a minute and
no longer whispering.
Grizz looks up to the sky,
as if seeking patience or guidance from above, he
adjusts his backpack and then follows close behind
her.
Following patiently behind until the
path widens out a little, giving him room, Grizz comes
up beside Veronica. He takes her arm and turns her to
face him. She is still talking nervously. He raises his
index finger, and places it...against his own lips,
Veronica having promised to bite him the next time he
put his finger on her lips.
She looks a little
startled, then she bursts out laughing, clapping both
hands over her mouth to stiffle the sound a
little.
Grizz grins widely, please that he had
made her laugh. Maybe it would ease her nervousness.
Then he says quietly to her...
"We're almost
through the trees. Look there. The path keeps on going
through that grass and up the hill. There isn't much to
hide us out there. If we don't want to be surprised by
something, or someone, we need to be really alert, and
look both ways. And we can go side by side instead of
single file. Are you ready?"
Veronica nods, her
eys still laughing over her hands still covering her
mouth. He grins at her again, and jerks his head at the
narrow opening in the trees, and they go cautiously out
from the trees and begin to climb the hills, following
the
path.
