Professor T links back to his beloved
Institution. Hmmm. Seems very quiet. Not many- What the
heek! He is suddenly startled by the sight of a gold
Dalek. After his initial shock he sees that it is
deactivated. Nevertheless, he plans to get Stellaflora
to take a look at it to make sure it can't be
re-activated.
He yawns and thinks an early
cocoa might be a good idea.

before Elkae and JIB can aim the big Shroomie gun and

Awwww, Ancient Badger, that conversation
wasn't for YOUR ears. You're okay. It's just that some
of your bouncing cousins are a little .... effervescent
to the extreme. Uhm, could you do something about
that??
I'll try to have a word with them Elkae,
but they are so much like kids, or adults for that
matter, and like to play and have their fun. Well, you
know how things are, especially when they get
encouragement to be incorrigible.

Elkae wanders into the Institution while
everything is quiet. She takes in the wonder of it all.
An evil thought flashes through her mind: she's glad to
be a beneficiary of the fall of the D'ni.
She
walks slowly up the stairs toward the classroom and
stops to play with the light switches for the garden.
She liked the orange light the best. It made her feel
warm and happy. The gentle lapping of the water against
the rocks was soothing, the faint rush of the waterfall
was barely audible as background noise.
She
walked on, stopping to marvel at the clock. A clock like
that makes time seem to stand still--something equally
desirable and undesirable depending on the moment. She
peeked into the linking room. Where once there had been
a line of giddy explorers eager to link out, there was
only the low whirr of the nexus pedestal as it
turned.
There was a sweet aroma coming from the
Egg Room where Viv and Kestryll supplied their tasty
fare. She popped in for a cup of hot coffee and a
grilled english muffin. The cool white of the mug seemed
incongrous to the heat emanating through the
porcelain.
Leaving the Egg Room, she turned left
and eyed the door of the Classroom. She knew Thietris
would be sleeping, but she was powerless to resist the
urge to peek in on him in case he might still be awake.
There, in the oversized drawer, lay the little
professor. A hind paw twitched, revealing evidence of
some nocturnal adventure. She reached down and pulled
the blanket over the paw and smiled. As she left, she
gathered up the half-emptied cocoa mug and
crumb-littered plate from his desk.
As she walked
back into the Egg Room to deposit the soiled dishes, she
stopped to take a long look at the big blue egg floating
in air. The craftsmanship was exquisite. She wondered
was it hollow or solid? What kept it afloat? What was
its purpose? Her tired brain began to drift, signalling
time for her to go home and find a piece of sleep for
herself.
She loved the neighborhood, the
Institution, her friends. What a marvelous place this
was to live. This place called Uru. This place where
only adventurers dare to dwell.
Veronica linked into the Institution
after spending several days on her Relto, trying to
absorb all the information in the book Yeesha had given
her. She needed a break from it for a while, especially
when she began reading the pages and pages of
information on all the kings. How she wished she could
just have a summary. Her poor brain reeled from all the
information.
As she made her way down the stairs,
she reminded herself to see Chere and Seymour about the
plants she and Grizz had seen in the DRC
age.
Walking into the DISCO, the first thing she
sees is Grizz sitting at the counter, with his feet
propped up, having coffee and fig
newtons.
Without a greeting or a how do you do
she lit into Grizz. "Well, this is lovely." She puts her
hands on her hips. "You left me there, stranded, with no
way home. Thankfully what's-his-name dropped my Relto
book otherwise who knows how long it would have been
before I was rescued. Did you stop to think why it was
taking me so long? Were you worried at all? I tried to
capture the squee. Don't laugh, this is serious. I was
going to bring her home, but you know who showed up." He
raised his eyebrows. "Yeesha. Yeesha showed up and gave
me this frelling novel to read. Did you even notice I
was gone?" She pouts and plops down on the stool and
eats a fig newton.
Grizz gets up and comes around the
counter. He looks sternly down at her. She looks up, a
little startled by his expression. He begins to
speak...
"Do you have any idea how glad I am to
see you back safe?"
And the stern look is
replaced by a huge smile, and he pulls Veronica up and
gives her a big{{{{{{{{Veronic}}}}}}}}}}}}
"I
want to hear all about what happened to you after I
left, but not until you have had a good night's
sleep."
He takes her by the hand and pulls her to
the door of the back room, where the cot still stands.
He smiles, and says...
"The cot is still there.
Use it for tonight. You can go back to your relto
tomorrow. I'll call you for breakfast. I'm so glad
you're home safe. Good night."
And he pushes her
gently through the door, and closes it after her. Then
he goes back to finish his coffe and Fig
Newtons.

Elkae, thank you for that wonderful description of the
Institution. Wherever our flights of fancy take us, we
return to the Neighborhood and to Uru, reminding us not
only of what we've lost but also - and more important -
what we still have.
